Special alloy CPM-S30V knife steel promises to give the 4″ blade of Spyderco’s tactical knife the edge holding capability of traditional high carbon alloy plus the corrosion resistance and low maintenance of high carbon stainless. Many quality stainless steels originally were designed for special purposes in aerospace or industrial applications and subsequently turned to use in the knife market. Alloy CPM-S30V was created for knives.
The G-10 synthetic handle material, chemical resistant as well as thermally reliable, and non-slip under both wet and dry conditions, potentially creates a perfect partnership in this still pocket sized lockback. Black epoxy eliminates reflection, and its many conveniences, including light weight (4.2 oz.), full size (overall locked length of 9.5″), clip carry and one handed opening all point towards a knife worth buying.
On the down side, Spyderco lacks the reputation for consistency that a company like Kershaw has earned. Their claim that this knife can be opened one handed even while wearing gloves is suspect at best. As with their other knives, the Military was created with a single purpose in mind: cutting. Their guarantee covers no other use, so if you intend to use this like the classic American “pry bar” combat knife you will be disappointed. Use it within the company specs and you’ll be happy (and covered by the warranty).
