Ah, the seduction of the mandoline. It promises effortless production of wafer-thin chips, slices and juliennes.
And yet, it also presents a scary proposition. Moving your hand close to an exposed blade in the opposite direction of the blade’s edge is a recipe for some serious gouges.
The safety issue is mitigated, of course, by the oversized handgrip provided but some complain that it keeps them from slicing those last bits of carrot, potato or yam.
This model from Zyliss is not intended to be a heavy-duty workhorse. Most parts are plastic and the blade is not exactly top-of-the-line.
But people who have it really like it and it’s only twenty bucks or so. Its folding design means it stores in a compact space and the dial for setting cutting thickness could not be simpler to use.
If you’re looking to get started with a Mandoline and don’t want to shell out big bucks, this is the model to choose.
It’s generally preferred over the OXO Good Grips Mandoline, which is more well-known.
