Gentlemen’s pocket knives are usually lightweights suited to light work. What has made Buck knives of this pocket class stand out above the rest is their practice of scaling down size without scaling down quality. The Buck 501 Squire, only 3 3/4″ in closed length, holds a single 2 3/4″ drop point surgical stainless steel blade. Similar knives from other manufacturers might have two or three blades, but the Squire puts that amount of steel in one. The lockback design allows safe use of the Squire for piercing tasks as well as slicing.
The Squire opens with two hands, an old design with considerable strength; but with a little practice safely closes with one hand. The clean lines of the Squire have no thumb stud or pocket clip to get in the way of work. It’s a plain and simple knife but beautifully made, with polished nickel silver bolsters, stable resin impregnated wood handle slabs, and a low luster satin finish on the blade.
If you feel the 3 ounce Squire is too much knife for a pants pocket, you can use the fine black leather belt sheath to keep it always handy.
As with all Buck knives, the Squire is covered by the Forever Warranty, guaranteed against defects in materials or workmanship for as long as you own it.
