Here’s a “Gladiator” replica sword to consider, and this time we’re highlighting the weapon Maximus used during the beginning of the film. As long as you like durable craftsmanship, fine attention to detail, and period authenticity, you’ll find a lot to like about this Maximus Gladius sword, too.
The blade is forged from pure 440 stainless steel with a mirror-polished finish. It’s cut in a traditional European cross-sectional rhombus design, defined in some cultures as a bastard sword. It measures just short of 30 inches, making the entire sword measure 38.5 inches in overall length.
Real ivory would be costly for an accessory sword, so the handle is made from imitation ivory instead. A golden-colored medallion is inlaid into the grip, matching the decor of the wooden pommel and steel guard.
On the guard, the letters SPQR are lightly embossed on the front of the rim. This means “Rome” in Latin. Additional steel decorations ornament the rest of the guard as well.
A wooden scabbard comes with the sword, enclosing a leather cover and topped off with a golden-colored throat. It also features a brown leather carrying strap that attaches to steel fittings on the scabbard, engraved in the shape of laurel leaves and a lion’s head.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the Maximus Gladius is not sharpened. So that means if you’re looking for a fully functional, battle-ready gladiator sword, this one won’t live up to your expectations. But if you’re in the market for a decorative accessory sword that you can hoist in the air while shouting “My name is Gladiator!” then you shouldn’t have to look elsewhere.
